On 21st December, 1914, 2 Brigade of 1st Division moved from Hazebrouck to Le Touret in France to reinforce the India Corps which, on the previous day, had been heavily attacked from Cuinchy to the cross roads south of Neuve Chapelle. North and south of Givenchy trenches had been lost while on the front east of Festubert a 300 yard breech had been made in the line by the enemy.

On 22nd December the 2nd Royal Sussex battalion relieved the 1st Seaforth Highlanders at Festubert as the fighting continued. The trenches here were in a terrible condition after recent heavy rain and 2nd Royal Sussex found themselves hard pressed by both the conditions and the continued enemy attacks. They remained here until relieved on 23rd December by which time the fighting had died down. One of their casualties was Arthur Petty who was killed on 23rd December.
